Berlin Tempelhof Airport (German: Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof) was an airport in Berlin, Germany, situated in the south-central borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg. The airport ceased operating 2008 in order to make Schönefeld the sole commercial airport for Berlin.

Designated by the Ministry of Transport on 8 October 1923, Tempelhof became the world's first airport with an underground railway station in 1927, now called Platz der Luftbrücke after the Berlin Airlift. While occasionally cited as the world's oldest still-operating commercial airport, the title was disputed by several other airports, and has in any case been moot since its closure.

Tempelhof was one of Europe's three iconic pre-World-War-II airports — the others being London's now-defunct Croydon Airport and the old Paris - Le Bourget Airport. One of the airport's most distinguishing features is its large, canopy-style roof that was able to accommodate most contemporary airliners during its heyday in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, thereby protecting passengers from the elements. Tempelhof Airport's main building was once among the top 20 largest buildings on earth. Tempelhof formerly had the world's smallest duty-free shop.

Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008, despite the efforts of some protesters to prevent the closure.

The Kino International is a film theater in Berlin. It is located on Karl-Marx-Allee in former East Berlin and hosted premieres until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Das Kino International diente bis 1989 als Premierenkino der DDR. Zahlreiche DEFA-Filme hatten hier ihre Premiere. Speziell für die Partei- und Staatsführung wurde die achte Reihe, in der man eine optimale Sicht hatte, mit einer besonderen Beinfreiheit versehen. Vor und nach den Premieren hielten sich die Besucher der Staatsführung im „Repräsentationsraum“ (heute „Honecker-Lounge“) auf. Im Keller wurde für die Staatsführung ein wenige Personen fassender Bunker und im Gebäudeinneren ein Aufzug nachträglich eingebaut. Seine letzte Premiere in der DDR fand am 9. November 1989, dem Tag des Mauerfalls, mit Heiner Carows „Coming Out“ statt.

Heute wird das International von zahlreichen Filmemachern aufgrund seines Ambientes wieder als Premierenkino genutzt und ist Spielstätte im Rahmen der Berlinale. Es ist beliebt bei den Berliner Kinogängern als Kino mit Tradition und besonderer Atmosphäre. Die sehr großen Filmplakate des Films der Woche an der Außenseite des Internationals werden noch per Hand von Filmplakate-Malern gezeichnet und sind ein echter Blickfang.

The "Kosmos" (Cosmos) was a large cinema located on the street Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin, Germany. During the GDR (DDR) East Germany time, it was the largest cinema in the country. It was later converted to an event center but used to seat over 3400 people.

Das Kosmos war ein Großraumkino an der Berliner Karl-Marx-Allee. Es war das größte Kino der DDR und wurde bis 1989 als Premierenkino genutzt. Nach der Wende übernahm es die UFA, die das Kino 1996 in ein Multiplex-Kino für 3400 Zuschauer umbauen ließ. 2005 wurde der Kinobetrieb im Kosmos durch die UFA eingestellt. Seit 2006 wird das Haus als Veranstaltungszentrum genutzt.

Paco de Lucía, born Francisco Sánchez Gómez (in Algeciras, Cádiz on December 21, 1947), is a Spanish flamenco guitarist. Recognized as a virtuoso flamenco guitarist all over the world, he is a leading proponent of the Modern Flamenco style. He is the winner of the 2004 Prince of Asturias Awards in Arts and also several Grammies...He performed to a delighted Berlin audience who he dazzled with his masterful guitar playing. His father first gave him a guitar in 1951.

Mauerpark is a public park in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district. The name translates to "Wall Park," referring to its status as a former part of the Berlin Wall and its Death Strip. The park is located at the border of Prenzlauer Berg and Gesundbrunnen district of former West Berlin.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Mauerpark area served as the location of the Old Nordbahnhof ("Northern Railway Station"), the southern terminus of the Prussian Northern Railway opened in 1877-78, which connected Berlin with the city of Stralsund and the Baltic Sea. Soonafter it lost its role as a passenger station to the nearby Stettiner Bahnhof and remained in use as a freight yard. In 1950 the Stettiner Bahnhof took the name Nordbahnhof because of its role in Berlin's public transportation system, and the Old Nordbahnhof became known as Güterbahnhof Eberswalder Straße. It was finally closed after the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
When viewed from above, one can still see remains of the railroad tracks running towards the former station from the Ringbahn.

In 1945, through the division of Berlin into four occupation zones, the land of the Old Nordbahnhof stretching from Bernauer Straße to Kopenhagener Straße was split between the French and Soviet sectors. After the building of the Berlin Wall, the land was included into the heavily guarded Death Strip with walls on either side. One of the viewing platforms, from which West Berlin residents could look over the wall into East Berlin, stood at this location. The remaining western part of the station was turned into a storehouse and commercial area.
An interesting aspect and a problem for the East German guards was the fact that the anterior part of the Wall strip was located on the steep embankment of the former railway tracks at a higher elevation than the adjacent area in the west. Yet in 1988, the East Berlin authorities concluded an agreement with the West to acquire a strip of land at the bottom of the hill to set up a more efficient border.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the former death strip was designated as a public space and one of several green spaces in the city by local residents. With a contribution of DM 4.5 million from the Allianz environmental fund, the park was built on the eastern half of the former train station. However, the western half, which still belonged to the Bundeseisenbahnvermögen real estate association, remained a trade area and since 2004 has served as the location for a flea market next to the park. Several attempts to attach the western part to the green space have so far failed.

Today the park is one of the most popular places for young residents of Berlin, especially from the fashionable district of Prenzlauer Berg, and attracts basketball players, jugglers, musicians, and many other types of people. It is a crowded leisure ground and a site of sustainable improvised nightlife, especially in the Summer, and has also become notorious for Walpurgis Night riots in recent years. There are two stadiums next to the park, including Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Sportpark and Max Schmeling Halle, home to several of Berlin's local sports teams.

A 30m strip of the Berlin Wall still stands in the park today as a monument, and is a popular place for graffiti artists to paint and display their work.

Berlin Potsdamer Platz is a railway station in Berlin. It is completely underground and situated underneath the Potsdamer Platz in central Berlin. Regional and S-Bahn services call at the station.

The first station at Potsdamer Platz was the Potsdamer Bahnhof terminus, which was closed on 27 September 1945 due to war damage. The S-Bahn station, situated in the Nord-Süd-Tunnel, was situated directly under the Berlin Wall and became a ghost station between 1961 and 1989.

The station was extensively remodeled and rebuilt in the 1990s.

You usually don´t see what is past the end of the runway at fashion shows. It´s this! A small area where 30-50 photographers try to fit inside and get the best shot possible. Many times you are pointing your lens through the space between 3 other photographer´s hands, shoulders, or elbows!

Photographers / Agencies mark their spots before the show begins. Obviously DPA (largest german photo / news agency), Associated Press, and Reuters are at the front. You can also see Action Press and Getty Images in the photo.

Where was I shooting from?

During the fashion show, you see how competetive and seriously photographers take their work. Some are freelance and others have a daily salary. There are often arguements and disagreements:

"You are in my way!"

"I was here first!"

"Hello? Can you move so I can get a shot?"

Berlin residents walk ontop of the frozen Landwehrkanal. The Landwehrkanal is a 10 km long canal parallel to the Spree river in Berlin, Germany, built between 1845 and 1850 according to plans by Peter Joseph Lennè].

It connects the upper part of the Spree at the Osthafen (Eastern Harbour) in Friedrichshain with its lower part in Charlottenburg, flowing through Kreuzberg and Tiergarten.

Today the waterway is mainly used by tourist boats and pleasure crafts. In Kreuzberg a long part of the Landwehrkanal is accompanied by the U1 line of the Berlin U-Bahn, which runs here as an elevated railway.

Growing up in the small town of Michelstadt, Germany, she won a contest of the German teen magazine Bravo in 1993. Subsequently, she worked as a model and VJ for the music channel VIVA. In 2000 she started her acting career and is occasionally hosting events, e.g. the German Film Award 2004. Schwarz separated from actor Daniel Brühl after a 5 year relationship in 2006 and is currently living in Berlin.

I met a man from Ecuador at the market in Berlin on Sunday. I saw him before in the summertime selling Panama hats but now he is selling Alpaka sweaters in the winter.

Alpacas are animals kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile at an altitude of 3,500 m (11,000 ft) to 5,000 m (16,000 ft) above sea-level, throughout the year.] Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas, and unlike llamas, alpacas were not bred to be beasts of burden but were bred specifically for their fiber. Alpaca fiber is used for making knitted and woven items, much as wool is. These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide variety of textiles and ponchos in South America, and sweaters, socks, coats and bedding in other parts of the world.

I enjoy photographing photographers. In a way, I mock myself because I imagine how silly I look taking pictures. And of course, it amuses me. Anyway, I wanted to tell you an imaginary story . . .

In this case, a Russian security wanted to photograph me after he found me in the wilderness (I was leaving my new abandoned studio space).

I know I was in a Belarus, but there were still Russians everywhere. Come on, did you know that ??

He asked me why I was taking pictures with a Canon. I responded with a question as well:

"Why take you pictures with Nikon?"

He took my photo and I took his photo.

We shook hands, saluted each other, and parted ways . . .

Daniel Arruda is a Brazilian composer / musician who resides in Berlin. His own personal mix of rythmic acoustic guitar, a warm & captivating voice, has created his own brand of sound which he calls "Nova Musica Popular Brasileira"(NMPB) meaning "New Wave of Brazilian Folk Music". A mixture of Bossa Nova, Samba, and Global sounds

His poetic songs reflect his experiences & travels beginning in Brazil and later leading him to Europe. The compositions have a South American base yet are fused with African & European elements.

Recently, he has composed music for a children´s book "Der Kleine Medikus" which has drawn much attention in Germany and is currently a play touring Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Protestors from around Germany went to Dessau to hold a peaceful demonstration in memory of Oury Jalloh, a 36 year-old Sierra Leonean refugee who died in a police station in Dessau, Germany, on January 7th, 2005, tied with handcuffs to a fire-proof mattress at his hands and feet. There were about 150 protestors who marched through the city from 2pm until 5pm and about 200 police officers. They began at the main train station, marched past the court, and finally ended at the police station where Oury Jalloh died.

The spaces we occupy in our lives.

I met a man from Iraq this past Sunday. He was working at a Berlin Market where I also sell my photos every Sunday. As soon as I saw the delicious assortment of Baklava and the lovely steam eminating from his teapot, I knew I had to speak to him.

We spoke during the most of the day and helped each other out with change. When he had to go to the bathroom, I sold his wares and likewise.

He told me he lived in Germany for over most of his life, about 15 years. Untypically, he spoke accent-free German and was married to a woman to Iran. Almost all of his friends are German and I can see he has integrated himself into german society (which is not an easy thing to do, more on that in a future post).

At one point, I thought he turned to me and said, "Ich muss pinkeln" which means "I gotta piss" so I told him "Viel Spaß". Suddenly, he ripped a piece of paper and threw it on the ground. I noticed a persian rug and he bent over to pray towards Mecca. I felt embarassed.

Afterwards, I apologized to him and told him what I thought he heard.

He was not upset.

After many days of heavy snow, Berliners found the ideal conditions to practice winter sports. The beloved Viktoriapark in Kreuzberg, central in Berlin, become a destination for over a hundred families.

As snow melts in Berlin, Icicles form. An icicle is a spike of ice formed when water dripping or falling from an object freezes. Typically, icicles will form when ice or snow is melted by either sunlight or some other heat source (such as heat leaking from the interior of a heated building), and the resulting melted water runs off into an area where the ambient temperature is below the freezing point of water (0°C/32°F), causing the water to refreeze. Over time continued water runoff will cause the icicle to grow.

I live near the crossing of Yorckstrasse / Mehringdamm in Berlin. I always enjoy looking at this sign which points to various aread of Berlin.

Somehow with the snow and icicles it seemed visually even more interesting.

At the intersection of Yorckstrasse and Mehringdamm in the neighborhood of Kreuzberg, Berlin, many signs point to various districts in Berlin. After many days of heavy snow, icicles formed on the signs. The sign points to the A100 Autobahn, Neukölln, Mitte, Charlottenburg, and Tiergarten.

More snow is expected in the next few days in the german capitol.

Today after heavy snowfall many Berliners woke up to a beautifully covered city. Nearby in Viktoria Park, many adults went sledding with their kids.

More snowfall is expected in the new few days . . .

The photographer GArRA appeared the other day in a public place in Berlin but refused to reveal his identity. In 1963, he left his home country of Latvia to pursue a career as a disc jockey in Slovakia.

Tib Mucinu became well-known for his style of vacuum-sealed remix albums combined with a distinct flavour of paprika-induced capsicum beats. Sauteéd with balkan string orchestra compilations and orangutan chants from the greek island of Aetna, he became famous for his insustainable stamina and autistic vision.

Tib was invited to come to Berlin in the early 90s and since then has transformed the mid-underground scene cuts into a riot of semi-photographically induced musical senses.

Currently, he is the house DJ for the most famous club in Berlin, derdiedas Waterberghaincutcatkotz club in the trendy district of Prenzlauerhainmittekreuzbergtowburg. His contract expires next year and he is considering returning to Latvia and opening a lactose-tolerant vinyl factory.
